What are Friulane? Friulane are more than just velvet slippers; they are a piece of history. Originating from the Friuli Venezia Giulia region in Northern Italy, our velvet shoes are handcrafted by local artisans in small family manufacture which carry on these centuries-old traditions.
They have a fascinating past: traditionally crafted by peasants from scraps of fabric and discarded materials, their charm was so undeniable that they were soon adopted by two very different worlds: the hardworking gondoliers of Venice, who valued their grip and silent tread, and the Italian upper class, who embraced them for their refined, understated luxury.
At KALAMAS, we stay true to the tradition by using the same authentic techniques. Most notably, the outer sole is made from recycled bicycle tires, just as it was in the past. It’s our way of honoring a heritage where nothing goes to waste, and everything is made by hand with intention.
Why are they so special?
-
Versatility: Designed to be worn both indoors and outdoors, they are the ultimate universal piece for your wardrobe that effortlessly polishes any outfit.
-
The Comfort: The soft, premium velvet gently molds to your foot, making you feel like you’re walking on a cloud from the very first wear.
-
The Soul: Every pair is handmade with love. We don’t just create a product; we create a connection. Because they come in a signature satin pouch, your Kalamas are always ready in your bag, waiting to transport you to your next adventure.
Why we call them by name: Inspired by my love for traveling, every shoe is named after a district, region, or city that has left a mark on my heart. When you slip them on, I want you to feel that sense of wanderlust…like you’re stepping into a new place, a new moment, or a dream you’re ready to make your reality.
